Jamaica’s 200m 1-2-3 finish on track
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Olympic bronze medallist Warren Weir, the first Jamaican on the track in the 200 metre World Champs semi finals Friday morning did just enough to qualify running 20.34 in Heat 3.
Nickel Ashmeade, in Heat 4, kept the Jamaica 1-2-3 finish in the finals alive taking second behind a hard running Alonso Edwards of Panama (20.45). Antoine Adams of St Kitts (20.56) was third.
Heat 5 saw Jamaica’s Jason Livermore and Wallace Spearmon of the US both clocked at 20.59 seconds to finish second and third respectively. James Ellington of Great Britain won in 20.55.
Usain Bolt (20.66) romped the seventh and final Heat 7, waiting on Delano Williams of Great Britain (20.72) to catch up as both crossed the line almost together. Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad (20.85) was third.
Williams from the Turks and Caicos Islands attended Munro College in Jamaica and is representing Britain for the first time.
Heat 6 was won by Adam Gemili of Great Britain in 20.17, the fastest time of the qualifiers.
The first three in each heat and the three fastest losers progress to the semi finals later at 10:40am Friday, Jamaica time.
