Jamaica women’s 4×400 relay team disqualified
MOSCOW, Russia — Jamaican team officials have launched an appeal into the disqualification of the Jamaican women’s 4x400m relay team from this morning’s preliminaries at the 14th IAAF world Championships at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, Russia.
The referee’s report said the Jamaican team that had placed second to Russia in 3 minutes 25.25 seconds and taken an automatic spot was disqualified after a protest was launched by the Ukrainian team.
The team of Rosemarie Whyte, Kaliese Spencer, Anastacia Leroy and Christiane Day was thrown out because of a lane violation it was said.
According to the report “The Referee examined the video of the race and disqualified the Jamaican Team under rule 16.3. (lane violation).
“Romania, who was originally qualified by time (q) was therefore move up one step to second in the revised result, and therefore Automatically qualified to the next round (Q).
“The Ukraine, who was originally the fist team out, was thus qualified by time (q) for the next round.”
IAAF rule 163 states- Lane Infringement 3. (a) In all races run in lanes, each athlete shall keep within his allocated lane from start to finish. This shall also apply to any portion of a race run in lanes.
(b) In all races (or any part of races) not run in lanes, an athlete running on a bend, on the outer half of the track as per Rule 162.10, or on the diversion from the track for the steeplechase water jump, shall not step or run on or inside the kerb or line marking the applicable border (the inside of the track, the outer half of the track, or the diversion from the track for the steeplechase water jump).
Except as stated in Rule 163.4, if the Referee is satisfied, on the report of a Judge or Umpire or otherwise, that an athlete has violated this Rule, he shall be disqualified.
