Sensational Binnie lifts regional squash crown
GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Squash sensation, Chris Binnie outclassed Guyana’s Sunil Seth in a gruelling five-setter last night to make history by becoming the only man to win the Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Senior Championship four times.
Playing in his fifth final in five years, Binnie completed yet another successful defence of his regional crown, taking the prestigious title for the third consecutive year.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling to now have four titles, which is the record. This is what you dream about growing up, you want to be the best in your sport,” Binnie said after his history-making victory.
However, the All Jamaica Champion had a rocky road to glory as the final got off to a rough start when Seth, the hometown favourite, took the first game, much to the delight of his boisterous supporters. Binnie then rebounded spectacularly to break even by winning the second game and then move ahead by claiming the third.
Refusing to roll over, Seth roared back in the fourth game, forcing the defending champion to go the distance to keep his crown. Binnie, however, was more than up to the challenge and he overpowered Seth to win the Championship, 8/11, 11/7, 11/4, 8/11, 11/8.
“It was a very difficult match because it was close all the way to the end. It really took a lot of heart and determination to get through and I’m just thankful I was able to get the win,” Binnie said.
The victory is another entry on the 24-year-old’s impressive résumé as Binnie also won the All Jamaica Men’s title for the fourth time in July. He remains the only Jamaican to ever win a professional title and is currently ranked at 139 by the Professional Squash Association.
In addition, he had a good run at the World Games earlier in August where he created a major upset by beating world number 66 Harinder Pal Sandhu of India to reach the round of the 16.
“I plan to get more regional titles but I’m also looking to make the next step on the international level because I want to become the best in the world,” Binnie said.
Currently underway in Georgetown, Guyana, the 2013 Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Senior Championships will continue until August 17. The focus now shifts to the team competitions which kick off today with the Jamaican men taking on Barbados.
