Wahlberg’s master stroke
HOLLYWOOD actor Mark Wahlberg is adding some star power to the game of cricket.
According to barbadosadvocate.com, the American actor is owner of the Barbados Tridents — one of six teams created for the inaugural season of the Limacol-sponsored Caribbean Premier League.
The story did not state how much Wahlberg invested or when the acquisition took place.
Wahlberg, however, describes himself as “a huge cricket fan”.
“I’m excited to be a part of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) because I know cricket is huge in the Caribbean and a rich part of the region’s heritage,” Wahlberg was quoted saying.
“Sports and entertainment are a powerful combination, and the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) will appeal to a huge audience worldwide,” he continued.
The Barbados Tridents are currently in the semi-finals despite losing 27 runs to Guyana Amazon Warriors at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad on Sunday. Prior to the loss, the team had an unbeaten run.
Wahlberg thanked Canadian entrepreneur Ajmal Khan for introducing him to Barbados and the LCPL.
Khan, founder of Verus Capital in 1985, and later the merchant banking company Verus International Corporation in 1999, has made millions of dollars turning companies into successes around the world.
From 1985 to 1993, Verus Capital acquired and resold over US$2 billion in real estate properties, becoming the largest syndicator of properties in Canada.
He said the sport would benefit from Wahlberg’s involvement.
“Having Mark [Wahlberg] involved with the Limacol CPL is quite a coup for us. He brings a global celebrity appeal, which adds to the party atmosphere, and anticipation that is already building in these final days before the tournament begins. Having him as an ambassador of the greatest party in sport will indeed draw the attention of current and new cricket fans across the world, and we look forward to embracing a whole new generation of cricket fans in the US thanks to Mark,” Khan said.
Wahlberg has a list of films to his credit including 2 Guns, Four Brothers, Pain & Gain, The Departed, and The Other Guys. Before an acting career, Wahlberg scored a smash hit as Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch with Good Vibrations in 1991.
