Rivals Arnett, Tivoli clash in KSAFA Champions League
Perennial rivals Arnett Gardens and Tivoli Gardens clash today at 4:00 pm in the feature encounter as the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Champions League kicks off at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.
In the curtain-raiser at 2:00 pm, Rae Town will play August Town who gained promotion to the Premier League for this season.
KSAFA is the most powerful confederation with seven of the 12 Red Stripe Premier League teams in Harbour View, Waterhouse, Boys’ Town, Arnett Gardens, Tivoli Gardens, Cavalier and August Town.
However, Harbour View, the Premier League champion, have withdrawn from the tournament and are replaced by Rae Town in the eight-team pre-season tournament.
Zone A will be contested by Tivoli Gardens, Arnett Gardens, KSAFA Super League champion August Town, and Rae Town, while Waterhouse, Boys’ Town, Cavalier and KSAFA Syd Bartlett champion Whitfield Town are drawn in Zone B.
Rudolph Speid, KSAFA president, said although there is no title sponsor or prize money, it is a good pre-season tournament for the teams involved and a chance to look at some players for the upcoming season.
Last season, two invited teams in Jamaica’s National Under-20 and Montego Bay United contested the final with the youngsters emerging victorious.
Cavalier were the highest-placed KSAFA team and they will open against Boys’ Town in the feature encounter tomorrow at Collie Smith Drive at 4: 00 pm. Before that, Whitfield Town tackle the mighty Waterhouse at 2:00 pm.
With Tuesdays and Fridays being rest days, the semi-finals are set for Wednesday, August 21 and the final on Sunday, August 25 at venues to be named.
