National junior shoots sub-par round at Independence Classic
National junior representative Kei Harris brought excitement to the Sandals Golf & Country Club by shooting 69 on the first day of the Sandals Independence Golf Classic.
The 13-year-old battled heavy winds to finish the day with four birdies on her scorecard and the lowest round of her career. Harris, who will be 14 in a few days, finished the event on 149 strokes to win the junior girls 14-15 title.
Sandals-based Gifford Wilmot used home course knowledge to his advantage to shoot rounds of 77 and 71. Wilmot’s second-day level-par round cemented his hold on the title of Overall Champion of the Men and Senior flight category. William ‘Tommy’ Lee, who shot level par on day one, ended the event with 157 strokes to take second place.
Ricardo Perry took the winner’s title in the Men’s 7-11 category with a total of 155. Ian Royal of Cinnamon Hill was second with 164.
In the Men’s 12-17 group, Sebastian Ogden finished first with 166 ahead of Michael Bradford on 157.
Dennis Atkinson captured the Super Senior Overall title with 160 strokes after a nail-biting, three-way play-off with Fred Sutherland and Opeton Marshall. Michael Bachstetz finished in fourth with 164. In the 13-24 category, Khaleel Azan finished first with 175.
The juniors from the Sandals Foundation were in fine form with Oshae Haye topping the Boys’ 16-17 group with 155. Romaine Evans finished in first position (167) in the 14 and 15 group, while Luke Lindo came out on top in the 11-13 boys with 171.
