Mama Blossom for TOBA Trophy
THE DG Stables’ filly Mama Blossom is included among a competitive field of Restricted Allowance native-bred three-year-olds (NW2) down to contest the $715,000 Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders’ Association Of Jamaica Trophy feature at Caymanas Park, today.
The field of eight will contest the day’s highlighter going 1,400 metres. Scheduled as the seventh race on the truncated nine-race card, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders’ Association Trophy feature is scheduled to go postward at approximately 4:25 pm with first post at 1:10 pm, and Mama Blossom, who is one of two winners at the distance in the line-up, looks prime for further success following her two encouraging runs in early and mid-July.
Mama Blossom is prepared for the races by trainer Gary Subratie, and though saddled with joint top weight of 55.0kg, her fitness is not in question and it should take a very good performance by one of her rivals to deny her victory. Omar Walker, the leading rider at present, piloted the filly to her lone career success in mid-June. He was aboard again when she just failed to overhaul Sir Frederick in her last run in mid-July going 200 metres shorter than today’s call. Now that the distance has been increased to one she seems to enjoy, she should come into her own with a winning effort.
That may be easier said that done as since her victory a number of her rivals has come into their own with good enough performances to attract attention.
One of her main rivals is Princess Shaneil, who seems to have come on a ton since finishing second behind Awesome Code over today’s distance in May. Trained by Victor Williams for owners O’Shaun Connection, in her very next race going 200 metres farther, Princess Shaneil opened her winning account by a commanding 8 1/2 lengths. In her next race going 1,820 metres, Princess Shaneil, attempting (NW2) for the first time, was very competitive though finishing 11 lengths behind the talented Royal Vibes.
That performance certainly gave indications that this filly possesses the mark to take her place, and now running among lesser lights than on last, is enough evidence to consider her for serious mention, especially that trainer Williams has recalled Shane Ellis to replace Delroy Beharie in the saddle.
Miracle Run, a chestnut filly by Miracle Man, is the other rival in the line-up to savour victory going 1,400 metres, but it is Persian Gold, the lone colt in the field, who presents the greatest danger to a Mama Blossom’s victory. The bay colt by Traditional out of Emerald Belle (Dixie Union) bred by Ham Stables Ltd is an expensive $2.2-million purchase at the Yearling Sales, who is now coming to hand and an experienced campaigner at this level with four runs. Trained by Patrick Chang for WB Racing, Persian Belle in his last run going 1,400 metres faced a bellicose field on that day and was outmanoeuvred by his rivals Swapped, Perfect Day and Proud Song to finish in sixth position. Since then he has been working well and with the field competitive, but probably not as tenacious, he can at last leave (NW2) behind, especially with trainer Chang declaring the Visors for the first time. Jevvanne Erwin is the jockey called upon to get the job done.
