Uppa Tune is sweet music at Caymanas Park
IMPORTED colt Uppa Tune turned up in one of his devastating moods and blew away Open Allowance rivals to win the $800,000 Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission Trophy feature on the six-trophy BG&LC Emancipation Day card at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Ridden by Omar Walker for trainer Ian Parsard, Uppa Tune, an 8-1 betting option, ran 1,100 metres in a lively 1:05.3 minutes to beat his nearest rival, the 4-5 favourite, Palace Gold, ridden by Paul Francis, by 2 3/4 lengths. The American-bred gelding Rio Cobre, under Dick Cardenas, who dictated the early fractions along with stablemate New Kingston, ridden by claiming apprentice Oryane Sewell, finished third, another two lengths back. The Guv, hard ridden by claiming apprentice Romario Saunders, completed the frame in the field of seven.
Uppa Tune, owned by PJK Team, is a four-year-old colt by Concorde’s Tune out of Uppa Hughie (Secret Prince) bred by Kay Dennis & Florida Bloodstock LLC in the USA, was winning for the sixth time from 24 career starts, and
earned $436,000 as the winner’s share for a lifetime bankroll
of $3,605,750.
Earlier, Evageline C Livingston’s Classic Beau, brimming with engaging racing form, stepped up the claiming ladder on a $600,000 tag to beat high claimers in the
$370,000 Emancipation Day Trophy secondary feature by two lengths.
Adventurously ridden by jockey Clive Lynch for trainer Ryan Darby, Classic Beau was sent in chase of the leader, the 14-1 chance She’s So Special, piloted by the claiming apprentice Ruja Lahoe, after turning for home. Running like his old self, the seven-year-old son of Western Classic then shot to the front deep in the last 50 metres to win his first trophy race of the season, and second win overall. He ran 1,300 metres 1:21.0 minutes.
In other trophy races, Safe Passage, the 3-5 favourite ridden by Dane Nelson, won the Albert Rose Memorial Trophy. The Anthony Nunes-trained four-year-old bay gelded son of Coded Warning, began his challenge leaving the dummy rails and went past the 17-1 leader Sahara, ridden by claiming apprentice Ruja Lahoe close home to capture the event by 2 1/2 lengths.
The time for 1,000 metres straight was 1:00.2 minutes among Restricted Allowance IV (NB: four-year-olds and
upward (NW3).
The 6-1 chance Legendary Pleasure, also ridden by Walker, won the Charles Randle Cup for trainer Gary Subratie and owners Houston Stables.
The $362,000 Josseth Grey Trophy was won by Jovoun The Master ridden by Paul
Francis for owner/trainer Dennis Thwaites.
Jockeys Dick Cardenas, Walker and Francis took riding honours with two wins each. Francis’ other win was atop The Professional for trainer Everal Francis and owner Cookie and Sons, while Cardenas opened the programme aboard the 1-4 favourite Rum Punch for trainer Wayne DaCosta and owners Elizabeth DaCosta, Laurence Heffes & Eric V Martin, and closed the card on Veronica, a 5-2 chance for trainer Patrick Fong and owner Patrick Hall.
