CARDENAS, DACOSTA REIGN SUPREME
It was just one of those days when everything went right for jockey Dick Cardenas and trainer Wayne DaCosta. On Wednesday, July 24, Cardenas solidified his supreme return to form with a spanking four-timer, while the champion trainer scored a decisive triple to drive the nail further in the championship.
Cardenas rode two winners for DaCosta; Royal Vibes, who seems to have found his best legs again after a somewhat disappointing campaign leading up to the Classic race, and Titan, which was probably his ride for the day, coming from way off the pace, on the outside, to pip Spice with Paul Francis on the line. Royal Vibes and Titan are owned by popular owner Carlton Watson. Cardenas’ other winners were Jarreau for Phillip Elliott and Lady Like in the feature Master Blaster trophy for Dwight Chen.
DaCosta closed his three winners with Classy Prospect, who defeated El Poderoso with a driving stretch run.
CLAIMS FOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 24
There was only one claim on the nine-race card at the Park on Wednesday. In the day’s eightn race, trainer Edward Walker claimed the winner Live Water for himself.
FIRST-TIME STARTERS
Five horses will start for the first time on tomorrow’s wellsupported 12-race programme. They are: Sanata, a two-year-old chestnut colt by Traditional; All In, with owner listed as Ian Parsard and trained by Richard Azan; Liar Liar, a chestnut filly by Film Director; Hello Baby, trained, owned and bred by Lorenzo Robinson. Both Santana and Liar Liar run in the first race which is a juvenile event. Other first-time runners are foreigners Badge Eighty Three, a three-year-old bay colt by Act of Duty, trained by Fitzgerald Richards. No mare has been listed as yet for Badge Eighty Three. The other foreigner is Wondamarq, a chestnut filly by El Nino-Make My Marq, trained by Tensang Chung.
The final newcomer running in the seventh race is Cash Global, a four-year-old bay filly by Urban King-LSC Choice, trained by Donovan Thompson.
DAVID VERNON BACK IN THE HOUSE
It was so good to see former owner and very unique racing commentator David Vernon at Caymanas Park on Wednesday. Vernon was a very popular commentator in the 1970s and is remembered for his spontaneous commentary and his love and affection for Overall, a horse who gave him much joy and sometimes very anxious moments.
Vernon was at the track to present the Master Blaster trophy, which was the feature event on the day. The former commentator had a very special affection for Master Blaster, one of the most durable horses to race at the Park. Good to see you, Master David.
