Brown finishes 8th in US golf tourney
JAMAICAN pro golfer Wesley Brown turned in a final round one over par 73 to finish four under par for a respectable eighth place and among the prize money, at the Palmetto State Open Tournament held at the River Hills Golf Club, South Carolina, yesterday.
Brown, who was four strokes off the lead overnight in the three-day tournament, carded four bogeys and three birdies for an overall 212 scorecard. He had shot 71 and 68 in the previous rounds.
The event was won by American Paul Woodbury, who tore up the back nine, recording six birdies in the last 10 holes on his way to a final round 68, and overall 207 for a twostroke victory.
Brown made a good start and with two birdies was seven under par and looking quite dangerous. However, three bogeys on the back nine put paid to his chances of victory. His overall score, however, was just five strokes behind the winner.
In an interview following his event, Brown noted that conditions were tougher yesterday, but said he was pleased with his overall performance.
“I am a bit disappointed that I wasn’t able to finish higher, but I had a very good tournament. This was a strong field with a lot of experienced professionals,” Brown noted. He added that his game had improved tremendously over the past few weeks and he just needed to find more consistency during tournaments.
The young golfer’s 10-week trip is being sponsored to the tune of US$30,000 by Sandals Resorts International. Brown is currently employed at the Sandals Golf and Country Club.
The tournament is part of the National Golf Association Pro Golf Tour, which is the number three Men’s Professional Golf Tour in the United States after the PGA TOUR and Web.com Tour, and is the number one recommended developmental tour by more PGA TOUR and Web.com Tour Professionals.
