Mullings retains U15 title at CASA Junior Champs
Squash starlet Alyssa Mullings stormed to victory at the 2013 Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Junior Championships yesterday, convincingly defending her Under-15 Girls’ title and cementing her dominance at the regional level.
The rising star beat Barbadian Amanda Haywood 11/5, 11/5, 11/6 to take the trophy for the second consecutive year. The latest triumph completes a personal ‘grand slam’ for the 14-year-old, who won the All Jamaica Under-15 Girls’ title in June, and then became the youngest female to win the All Jamaica Senior Women’s title earlier this month.
The victory also marks the fourth consecutive year that Mullings will leave the Caribbean Championships with a regional title safely in hand.
“I am really happy that I’ve made my family, friends and country proud,” Mulling said shortly after winning the championship. “I hope to continue my victories in the team events later this week.”
Mullings’ win was the shining moment of an overall solid day of play for the Jamaican team who had six players finishing in the top three of their age groups.
All Jamaica Under-13 Girls’ champion Mia Mahfood was second in her age group category after losing 0/11, 7/11, 6/11 to Barbadian Megan Best in the final. Mahfood’s Under-13 compatriot Mia Lake was third; rallying from two sets down to beat Charlotte Toogood 10/12, 5/11, 11/7, 11/7, 11/8 and win an epic five-setter.
Under-15 Boys’ contender Jonathan Walker fought hard in his final, but went down 8/11, 5/11, 7/11 to Ben Mendecki of Guyana and had to settle for second. All Jamaica Under-15 Boys’ champion Tahjia Lumley beat Bermuda’s Dylan Pratt 11/6, 9/11, 11/7, 11/9 to place third.
The Jamaican juniors also did serious damage in the consolation rounds where they won four categories. All Jamaica Under-19 champion Julian Morrison won the plate competition in his age group, trouncing Zaki Williams of Barbados 12/10, 11/1, 11/2. Team captain Jessica Perkins did the honours in the Under-19 Girls’ category, scoring 11/9, 11/9, 11/6 to prevail against Angelique Jackson of Trinidad & Tobago.
Mira Handa also rallied back from an early round loss to beat Aimee de Verteuill of Trinidad 11/0, 11/8, 11/7 to win the Under-13 Girls’ plate competition.
Team captain Ashante Smith was scheduled to contest the Under-19 Boys’ title last evening to close out the individual age group competitions. Smith was seeking his first regional title to end his junior career on a high note. Today, the focus of the tournament will shift to the team events, which will run until the weekend.
