Martinique dethrone Trinidad
FORT de FRANCE, Martinique (CMC) — Martinique dethroned six-time champions Trinidad and Tobago three sets to one to win their first Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Junior Women’s Championships at the weekend.
Martinique outshone the Trinidadians to prevail 25-21, 25-20, 15-25, 25-23 at Morne des Peres, Hall des Sports, Sainte Luce.
Melissa Cyrilla and captain Gayanee Eniona combined for 27 for the winners.
Cyrilla had a team-high 13 points, punctuated with eight spikes and five aces, while Eniona tallied 11 points, 10 of which were spikes.
TT captain Zahra Collins had a match-high 19 points — 16 being kills, and three blocks, while Kaylon Cruickshank had 14 points, inclusive of 11 kills and three blocks.
The Calypso Spikers effort was undermined by a series of errors on passing, setting and serving.
However, Trinidad and Tobago enjoyed the better of the exchanges in terms of spikes (33-28) and blocks (8-5), while Martinique held the advantage on service aces (14-6) .
Earlier, Krysta Vertot and Vanessa Hatchi were a potent force as Guadeloupe outlasted US Virgin Islands 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 15-10 to take the bronze medal.
