Football battering – Jamaica, Cuba score big wins
JAMAICA and Cuba scored impressive 7-0 and 6-0 wins over Bermuda and Curaçao, respectively, to kick-start their Women’s Caribbean Football Union World Cup Qualifiers at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex last evening.
Jamaica jumped to the top of the four-team group on goal difference ahead of Cuba, with both on three points.
Three goals in the first half by Oshay Lawes in the 11th, 14th and 36th minutes, and a double by Shantel Thompson in the eighth and 27th minutes saw Jamaica rattle in six goals in the first half with Khadija Shaw getting on the score sheet
in the 31st minute.
Defender Courtney Douglas scored the only goal in the second half nodding home from a corner kick in the 57th minute.
In the curtain raiser, double strikes from Yoana Gonzalez (34th, 45th) and Roxana Goicochea (54th, 71st) paved the way for the rampant Cubans. Eliane Acosta had opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Yarisleidis Nora got on the score sheet in the 49th minute.
The competition continues tomorrow with host Jamaica tackling Curaçao at 4:00 pm, before Cuba take on Bermuda at 6:00 pm at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
