Young Girlz begin quest for U-20 WCup
JAMAICA’S Under-20 team will enter battle with Bermuda at 6:00 pm as Group Four of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Tournament kicks off today at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
In the curtain-raiser at 4:00 pm, Cuba play Curacao.
The top two teams will advance to the final round set for Puerto Rico in October, and head coach Vinimore ‘Vin’ Blaine is expecting the young Reggae Girlz to be there.
“Definitely. We had a two-week camp where we brought in everyone and tried as best as we can to get them gelling together, and organised them tactically. We played three practice games, two against boys and one against girls, just to help organise them, and for this round we are 90 per cent ready,” Blaine told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
As for today’s opponents, the newly appointed senior Reggae Boyz assistant coach to German Winfried Schaefer, believes Jamaica should be able to get the better of them.
Said Blaine: “We don’t know anything about Bermuda, but I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t overcome them.”
Host Jamaica will be in action again against Curacao on Thursday at 4:00 pm before Bermuda tackle Cuba at 6:00 pm. The final games will be played on Saturday, with Curacao facing Bermuda at 4:00 pm, and two hours later, Jamaica and Cuba face-off in the closing game of the tournament.
All games will be played at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, and there will be no admission charge for patrons.
The top two teams will join Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic, who have advanced from Group One, Anguilla and St Kitts from Group Two, and Suriname and Grenada from Group Three.
Meanwhile, US-based midfielder Nicole Harris of Troy University will be given her debut in a squad consisting of 11 local-based players and nine overseas-based players, including five from Canada, and four from the United States of America.
Most of these players have experience at the Under-17 and Under-20 levels in captain Chris Ann-Chambers, Shantel Bailey, Khadija Shaw, Georgia Bailey, Trudi Carter, Kayla Gray, Oshay Lawes, Cachet Lue, Courtney Douglas, Taylor Grant and Jorja Hughes.
Shantel Thompson, Konya Plummer, Kadine Dunn, Kedisha Cardoza, Deneisha Blackwood, Imani Richards, Robyn-Ann Whittaker and Alyssa Wright-Brown complete the squad.
