Caribbean teams bow out of Gold Cup
ATLANTA, Georgia — Caribbean teams bowed out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013 after suffering defeats in a quarter-final double-header at the Georgia Dome here on Saturday night.
In the curtain-raiser, Panama demolished Cuba 6-1, but kingpins Mexico were pushed to their limit by a stubborn Trinidad and Tobago for a slim 1-0 victory.
Both Mexico and Panama will meet in one semi-final at Cowboy Stadium in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday.
Mexico’s goal was scored by Raul Jimenez in the 84th minute when he got a slight right boot to the ball, responding to a right-sided cross from Miguel Layun.
Trinidad’s Soca Warriors can be proud of their dogged resistance to the Mexicans, who were lively throughout, and who threatened at every turn.
But Trinidadians, too, proved dangerous going forward, led by captain and the England-based Kenwyne Jones.
In the 10th minute, the Soca Warriors had their first real chance on goal when Daryl Roberts drove goalward from 20 yards, but Jonathan Orozco in the Mexican goal was equal to the task.
In the 81st, Trinidad were again on the hunt when Seon Power lived up to his last name by unleashing a scorcher that looked certain to create problems, but a Mexican boot averted danger.
In the day’s opener, Panama got their goals through Gabriel Torres (25th and 38th), Blas Perez (78th and 87th), Carlos Rodriguez (68th) and Jairo Jimenez (84th).
Cuba got the consolation through Jose Ciprian in the 21st minute when he lunged and then stabbed the ball home after being fed through by Alberto Gomez.
Even though Cuba took the lead and threatened an upset, Panama were not flustered and gradually found their way back into the fray with a slow but purposeful passing game.
Though Panama had hinted they were capable of scoring in open play, which they eventually proved repeatedly during the contest, they got the equaliser from the penalty spot courtesy of Gomez, after the ball was handled in the area by a Cuban defender.
Gomez put his side up 2-1 after finishing off a cheeky headed pass from Perez.
But the floodgates opened up after Cuba lost Ariel Martinez in the 58th minute to the red card route.
Panama went further ahead when Rodriguez executed a composed finish by delightfully side-footing past Odelin Molina in the Cuba goal.
After missing clear-cut chances prior, Perez eased his frustration when he beat the goalie with a cool finish just inside the penalty box.
At 4-1, it was clear that Cuba, the Caribbean champions, were on their way out of the Gold Cup.
But Panama were not finished with them and hit the target two more times through Jimenez and Perez, who pounced after Molina had spilled a peppery ball.
Panama will now move onto Cowboy Stadium in Dallas for the semi-finals on Wednesday, where they meet Mexico.
In the other quarter-final double-header at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Sunday, the USA were to tackle El Salvador, and Costa Rica were slated to face Honduras.
