Rio Cobre finally flows
BEREFT of a trophy race on the 10-race programme yesterday, the attention was focused on the toprated horses at the Overnight Allowance level going the minimum trip of 1,000 metres round.
Rio Cobre, after many tries and some amount of misfortune, came from just off the pace set by Awesome Camille and Smokin Man to score his second win of the year. It was a relief for his trainer, Wayne DaCosta, but more so for his owner, Derrick Smith, to see Rio Cobre win in such style and comfort in one minute flat.
It was a well-judged ride by jockey Dick Cardenas, who decided not to go with the early pace as is customary for Rio Cobre. He simply waited, got room on the rails and drove Rio Cobre home to win by four expanding lengths at the attractive odds of 9-5. Run Johnny Run (Paul Francis) was second with Awesome Camille (Omar Walker) third.
This was the second winner for the Panamanian-born Cardenas. He rode the Anthony Nunes-trained Fierceandfabulous to victory in the day’s fifth race to continue his good form of late.
The two-year-old juvenile race of the day was taken in good fashion by Gold Nut ridden by Paul ‘Country’ Francis and trained by Lorenzo Robinson, with second going to Cigaretteintherain, and third, another Robinson-trained horse Gold Price, who started as the 1-4 favourite.
This was the start of the first Super-6 race and punters got off to a rocky start as Gold Nut won at odds of 8-1. However, 55 punters were still able to win the first Super-6 collecting just over $60,000.
Jockey Paul Francis also rode two winners — Gold Nut, and Minnie Sunshine — in the ninth race for trainer Gary Subratie.
Meanwhile, trainer Kevin Brivette unsaddled his first career winner when Lesterae, under Shamaree Muir, won the third race over 1,200 metres.
Racing continues at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.
