Sir Von to rule at Caymanas Park today
WITH the condition and distance quite suitable to her style of running, the Western Syndicate dark bay filly Awesome Camille looks the prime candidate for success in the Overnight Allowance contest, the highest rated race on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park today.
The three-year-old and upward event was promoted to highlighter status following the abandonment of scheduled Reggae Trophy (Gr I) feature, which failed to attract the required number of entries to be carded.
The Overnight Allowance dash that is posted as the seventh race on the card has attracted a competitive field of seven runners going 1,000 metres round. The expected sizzling contest has attracted a number of other runners who will also enjoy the cracking short sprint that also includes Sir Von, Smokin Man, Runjohnny Run, Rio Cobre and Sunlight Express. Post time for the speedfest is scheduled at approximately 3:55 pm, with first post at 12:45 pm.
Awesome Camille, a four-year-old filly by Vanadium out of Lady T (Natural Selection) and bred by Joseph & Mrs Shirley McKesey, has been well prepared by her trainer Gary Subratie. A bullet run of 34.1 seconds over 600 metres in the filly’s final work on Sunday shows ominous signs to her six rivals of her readiness to open her four-year-old career with a win after three previous failed attempts.
Before her return to active duty this season Awesome Camille reeled off three consecutive wins in the middle part of last season, and only failed to make it four at the higher level in Open Allowance by her impressive imported stablemate Noon It Is. Coming in at 52.5kg for the leading jockey Omar Walker, Awesome Camille looks irresistible at the weights.
Nonetheless, the imported six-year-old horse Sir Von despite topweight of 57.0kg must not be discounted, as the very capable son of Even The Score also truly loves this short sprint. He was declared lame in his last attempt to race on June 8, but should he recover fully from his lameness, they may all have to play second fiddle to this well bred and versatile horse, who has the distinction of defeating Mark My Word over 2,000 metres two seasons ago.
Prepared for the races by champion and leading conditioner Wayne DaCosta, Sir Von, owned by Von G White, is also the fastest in the line-up over 1,000 metres round. Dane Nelson, who rode Awesome Camille for her last win over 1,000 round in August of last year, will now be atop Sir Von.
Despite his heavy impost though, with the forceful pilot Nelson up to navigate the way forward, a repeat of the 59.3 seconds posted on New Year’s Day, will come as a tribute to this capable multifaceted racer.
