What they say! – July 19
When did you start your career as a racehorse trainer?
I started to train horse long ago in 1991
Which horse was your first winner?
Pass The Catch, winner of the Drumbeat Trophy in 1992
What winner have you trained at the longest odds?
Regal Selection at odds of 26-1
The best horse you’ve trained?
Lady Savino. I took her from “C” Class to “A1” and won nine races with her. Regal Selection and Priceless Beauty are two other very good horses I’ve trained and won in excess of seven races each with both of them.
The best horse you have ever seen race at Caymanas Park?
Prince Consort. I’ve seen other very good horses, but you would have had to lead Prince Consort to beat him. I’ve also seen Legal Light who without any doubt was an immensely talented horse but Prince Consort is my choice.
Who has influenced your career most?
Willoughby Simpson. He was a groom and we grew up together. I was along with him at his stables and watching him groom his horses. This exposure opened my eyes to the sphere of training horses and I learnt a lot from Simpson until he eventually got his trainer’s licence. He then went abroad for a time on personal business. The stable was left under my care, and when he returned he said that I should become a certified assistant trainer. I did that and became his assistant. When my time of serving as an assistant trainer was completed, I became a licensed trainer.
