Javine lands Dr Clifford Grey Mem Cup
Javine played cat and mouse with the field before running out a convincing winner of the $715,000 Dr Clifford Grey Memorial Cup feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Ridden by leading jockey Omar Walker for trainer Fitzgerald Richards, Javine, a 7-1 bet, ran 1,300 metres in a time of 1:22.3 minutes to win the event by three lengths.
Ettu Oracle, ridden by Paul Francis, was second, with the 2-5 favourite Rock ‘A’ Way, ridden by Dane Nelson, finishing a disappointing one length farther back. The 21-1 shot Silver Sands, ridden by claiming apprentice Orlando Foster, completed the frame in the field of 10 after John D Linjah was turned back at the gates.
Rock ‘A’ Way took over the lead from the 99-1 chance Can Be Anything soon after the start. While Rock ‘A’ Way led the field at a brisk 23.1 and 47.1 for the first two quarters, Javine worked her way along the running rails and closed in on the leader in a striking position approaching the home stretch.
Walker, instead of motoring to the front, reserved his mount until turning for home behind the leader Rock ‘A’ Way. With 150 metres remaining, Walker produced Javine and within a few strides collared the leader to make his merry way home, as Rock ‘A’ Way failed to find anything extra in the drive to finish third.
Earlier, the highly thought of 1-5 favourite Midnight Launch, a first-time runner, failed to raise a serious gallop as the 33-1 Sir Frederick won the $715,000 Restricted Allowance II second race event for native-bred three-year-olds (NW2), and imported three-year-olds and upward maidens.
Owned and trained by Howard F McLeod, Sir Frederick ran 1,200 metres in a time of 1:14.0 minutes to win by two lengths from the 7-2 chance Mama Blossom ridden by Walker. Rhea A Superstar, who lead under Dane Nelson, finished third at odds of 7-2.
Meanwhile jockeys Dane Nelson and Dick Cardenas rode two winners each. Nelson opened the programme astride Awesome Sensation in the first race for trainer Anthony Nunes, and he closed the card with Nooklin Bridge for Richard Azan in the 10th and final, while Cardenas was successful astride Miss May for Barry Dawes in the fifth race, and Raging Prospect for Fitzroy Glispie in the eighth race.
