Jamaica take 2-0 lead against England
JAMAICA turned in another fine display to beat England 50-33 in their three-match contest at the 2013 Tri-Nation Under-21 Netball Series at the Dr Alfred Sangster Auditorium at the University of Technology (UTech) on Tuesday night.
The win was also Jamaica’s fourth, from as many matches.
Jamaica will be hunting a clean sweep over England when they meet again in their final encounter today at UTech at 7:30 pm.
Oberon Pitterson-Nattie, Jamaica’s Under-21 head coach, said she was very pleased with the performance of the players. “They stuck to the task and played really well.
“The players, however, still need more improvement as they need to tighten up on their turnovers and when you are on top, keep it going. We did play well in the first three quarters before England got the better of us in the final quarter,” Pitterson-Nattie said.
She said it was very good that England gave them some stiff competition in the fourth and final quarter, which shows what they can do. “They challenged us well in the final quarter and we must expect to have tough encounters.”
Meanwhile, England’s coach Colette Thompson said she was very disappointed with the entire performance of the players, as they could not put it together against Jamaica.
“The players failed to capitalise on their turnovers, and the shooters were very much off target. Apart from the shooters not being accurate, the attacking centre court players did not get the ball regular enough to give the shooters scoring opportunities,” Thompson said.
She said only in the last quarter did the players come fully together and produced what they are capable of doing.
“We will have to go back to the drawing board and hope that the players produce what we expect of them, as we need a better performance,” said coach Thompson.
In Tuesday’s encounter, Jamaica led 11-8 at the first break, 25-14 at half-time, 44-18 at the end of the third quarter.
For the Jamaicans, Shantal Slater netted 32 goals from 40 attempts, while for England, Craig scored 13 goals from 16 attempts, Travis 10 from 17 efforts, and Shaw 10 from 18 tries.
