Fowler cops coveted MVP award
ASCOT Park Hotel Southern Steel shooter Jhaniele Fowler has been named the 2013 Most Valuable Player (MVP) in her debut season, according to the ANZ Championship website.
The goal shooter finished her maiden season with 666 goals, breaking the league’s records for most goals in a season and most goals in a game, scoring 65 goals in a game twice this year.
“It is very special because I think I was born to play netball and then to be so good at what I do and what I love, it’s beyond special; I’m really blessed and thankful for it,” Fowler said of being named the competition’s best this season.
“Honestly, I was only going for shooting accuracy, not breaking records, so that is just a plus for me and I’m thankful for that also.”
Fowler has made a clean sweep of the awards after being announced as the ANZ Championship’s Best New Talent last Wednesday, and named as Goal Shooter in the 2013 Foxtel ANZ Championship All-Star team last Thursday.
The 23-year-old becomes the third import and second Jamaican to be named as the league’s Most Valuable Player, following in the footsteps of compatriot Romelda Aiken (2008, 2009) and England’s Sonia Mkoloma (2008).
The Jamaican international becomes the second youngest player to be named MVP behind Mission Queensland Firebirds’ Aiken, who first received the award at the age of 19.
Fowler, who has re-signed with the Steel for another two seasons, said her aim for next year is to help her side make the finals for the first time since their last appearance in 2010.
“Next year I am hoping for a place in the top four,” Fowler said.
“I’m going to train hard and keep up what I have now to make sure that when I’m back next year I won’t have to start over, so when we hit the courts and play — we’ll be ready.”
Fowler finished the 2013 season with 19 votes, which included votes in all but three rounds, including two Player of the Match performances against the EasiYo Tactix in Round Two and NSW Swifts in Round Seven.
Firebirds shooter Aiken finished in second with 18 votes, while Laura Langman (Kia Magic), Natalie Medhurst (Firebirds) and Carla Borrego (Thunderbirds) finished in a tie for third with 17 votes.
