Haiti top T&T in CONCACAF Gold Cup
MIAMI, Florida (CMC) — Trinidad and Tobago, the 2012 Caribbean Cup runners-up, suffered another setback in their 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup quest on Friday.
Trinidad lost 0-2 to fellow Caribbean Football Union (CFU) member Haiti at the Sun Life Stadium in South Florida and face the daunting task of advancing to the quarter-final stage.
In their first Gold Cup campaign since 2007, the eight-time Caribbean champion went behind in the 16th minute when Jean-Eudes Maurice of Haiti drove home on a loose ball from goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams.
Haiti doubled the score in the 53rd minute after Williams failed to clear cleanly and the ball ricocheted off Maurice’s body and into the net.
The Trinidadian had their fair share of opportunities, including a header from the powerful Kenwyne Jones.
Honduras edged El Salvador 1-0 in the second game of the double-header and head Group B with maximum six points from two matches. Haiti follow with three points and one point each for Trinidad and El Salvador.
The teams advancing to the quarter-finals from Group B will be determined tomorrow when El Salvador play Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago tackle Honduras in the second game at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.
