A dash of raw speed by Hupomone
IN a dashing display of raw speed, Hupomone humbled rivals to score a relatively easy win in the top-rated event, an Open Allowance for three-year-olds and upwards over five furlongs round, on the 10-race programme at Caymanas Park yesterday.
With the in-form Dick Cardenas in the saddle, Hupomone shot to the lead from the off and was never headed, although second-placed Palace Gold and third-placed and 3/5 favourite El Poderoso did make up some ground in the last half-a-furlong.
At one stage coming around the bend, Hupomone was leading by over six lengths, running as if she was chasing a scared hare. The imported four-year-old filly was winning her seventh race from nine starts, and travelled five furlongs in the impressive time of 58:3 seconds, behind scorching splits of 22.2 x 45.2.
Hupomone is trained by champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta.
The day’s feature, the Henry Harrison Senior Memorial Cup run over 1,300 metres, was won by odds on favourite Phineas over second choice The Professional.
But the big news swirling around the racetrack and which caught the rapt attention of punters had nothing to do with the day’s racing but the decision of the commissioners of the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) to overturn, on appeal, the disqualification of Campesino from first position by the stewards of the race meeting on June 22.
On the day, the race was awarded to second past the post Piscean Rocket. The appeal against the disqualification of Campesino was heard by the commission at their Winchester Road office on Thursday last.
The disqualification of the Philip Feanny-trained and Howard Hamilton-owned three-year-old gelding rattled punters at the Park and several of the off-track stations across the island. Many reacted by throwing missiles at where the stewards were located and there were reports of punters damaging sections of at least three of the off-track parlours.
The decision of the commissioners to reinstate Campesino means a final result of first Campesino (R Mairs); second Piscean Rocket (D Nelson) and third remains Jada’sfabuloustour.
The JRC commissioners also took the decision to reinstate Sunlight Express, who was disqualified from first position on June 13 and the race awarded to Persian Gold.
