Bicknell, Kameka star at Sagicor All-Jamaica Junior Tennis Champs
ANDREW Bicknell and Sheann Kameka were winners of two singles titles apiece on Sunday in the boys’ and girls’ sections of the four-day 2013 Sagicor Bank All-Jamaica Junior Tennis Championships held from July 4-7 at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre.
Top-seeded Bicknell captured the Boys’ 18 and under singles title by defeating Maiz Sinclair in straight sets, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. He first won the Boys’ 16 and under singles with an easy straight sets 6-1, 6-4 win over third-seeded Luke Therren.
In semi-finals of the Boys’ 18 and under, Bicknell defeated unseeded Devon Levy 6-2, 7-6 (10-8), while Sinclair upset second seeded Ryan Simms in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 to play in last Sunday’s final.
Unseeded Kameka first captured the Girls’ 14 and under singles title by outplaying Jenna Harrison in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, before going out to defeat Michaela Stephen 6-3, 6-1 for the Girls’ 16 and under singles crown.
Second-seeded Michaelann Denton had to work hard before beating third-seeded Shelitta Haughton 7-6, 4-6, 10-0 (tie-breaker). The sets were level at 1-1 before the tie-breaker where the first player to reach 10 points becomes the winner.
Cliff Dwyer captured the Boys’ 14 and under singles title with an easy straight sets 6-1, 6-2 win over Ruben Pinchas, while top-seeded John Azar won the Boys’ 12 and under singles crown, beating Ryan McCooke. The Girls’ 12 and under singles title was won by Jenna Harris, who defeated Emma Dibbs in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while the Boys’ 10 and under singles was won by John Chin, who beat Cole McNair 4-0, 4-1.
In the Boys’ doubles final, Ryan Simms and Maiz Sinclair win the title, while Denton and Francessa Chin beat the pair of Haughton and Leah Smyle to capture the Girls’ doubles crown.
Meanwhile, several of Jamaica’s junior players are expected to compete in the annual International Tennis Federation (ITF) Jamaica Invitational Junior Tennis Tournament to be held from July 20-27 at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre.
For the ITF Jamaica Junior Invitational Tennis Tournament, players are expected from the USA, Canada, Japan, Russia, Italy, England, The Bahamas, Barbados, Mexico, Guadeloupe, Bermuda, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, The Netherlands, El Salvador and several other countries.
