Jason DaCosta wins first Stakes race
JASON DaCosta, son of many-time Jamaican champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, won his first major race in the United States on Saturday last at the Calder Racecourse in Florida when his charge Silver Cloud, ridden by Fernando Jara, got home by a head in a five-furlong US$100,000 Stakes event run on the turf.
The racing footnotes from Calder described the race as follows: “Silver Cloud chased the pace three wide, rallied to engage Determinato in the stretch, then duelled with and edged that rival to the wire while just lasting over Tripski.”
The young DaCosta who left Jamaica in 2008 to pursue his career as a trainer was winning his 17th race for 2013, four of which have come at Calder and the other 13 at the Tampa Bay Downs racetrack.
“Without doubt this is my biggest win, and I am very pleased. The race was close but Silver Cloud battled gamely to last by a head in a very good time of 56:08 seconds,” DaCosta said.
