How they finished in the St Leger
OBSERVER racing writer Hurbun Williams gives his take on the performance of the 10 horses who participated in the St Leger last Saturday at Caymanas Park.
1. Willie Goldsmith (Jevvanne Erwin) — prompted an almost suicidal sprint duel with Uncle Taf. Had nothing left in the final four furlongs of the race. Finished ninth and is definitely a sprinter.
2. Rum Punch (Winston Griffiths) — Prominent throughout without firing any spark. A useful sort who will win out his condition races. Finished fourth.
3. Princess Sassy (Richard Mitchell) — out of place. Finished fifth.
4. Uncle Taf (Andre Martin) — Involved in that sprint and headline duel with Willie Goldsmith. Had nothing left in the final part of the race. Finished sixth.
5. Perfect Neighbour (Dick Cardenas) — Showed vast improvement. Went past the leaders at the four-furlong marker with ease and disdain. The best of the three-year-old lot who should do well in the longer races towards the end of the season. Winner by eight lengths.
6. Lady Abhijita (Paul Francis) — Oaks winner who could not mix it with the ‘boys’. Finished eighth.
7. Selectabook (Dane Nelson) — Best of the fillies. Showed dogged determination to finish second. Racing career will now continue in Trinidad.
8. Royal Vibes (Clive Lynch) — Could not repeat his Derby form. Slowly out and could not get back. Finished seventh.
9. Sir Fredrick (Omar Walker) — completely out of his depth. Finished tenth.
10. Hover Craft (Shane Ellis) — Stayed at the back for most of the race. Could not rally enough to have an impact in the straight. Best showing this year in the Classics. Finished third.
