2013 classic analysis
THE 2013 Classic season is now over. The Complete Racing Guide looks at the results of these races, the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, the Jamaica Oaks, the Jamaica Derby and the Jamaica St Leger and the top achievers.
HORSES
The top Classic performer was undoubtedly Perfect Neighbour. After losing the 2,000 Guineas by the shortest of margins, Perfect Neighbour won the Derby with a thrilling final burst and showed tremendous improvement as he easily defeated rivals in the St Leger by eight lengths.
Perfect Neighbour is set to have quite a telling contribution later in the year in races such as the Prime Minister’s Stakes (10 furlongs); the Governor General Stakes (10 furlongs) and the Harry Jackson (12 furlongs). He should provide some useful competition for the already established stayers Mark My Word and Typewriter.
The best three-year-old filly based on performances in the Classic races is Selectabook — winner of the 1,000 Guineas and second in the St Leger. This filly had an extremely rough and difficult passage in the Oaks, and will be a top performer when she lands in Trinidad and Tobago. Willie Goldsmith showed much early promise and strengthened that position when winning the Colts’ Guineas. He was never a winning factor in longer races. Has ability is in sprinting.
OWNERS
Leading owner WB Racing celebrated a first Classic win with Willie Goldsmith in the 2,000 Guineas. Jeffery Mordecai and Alfred Lee were also first-time Classic winners — Perfect Neighbour in the Derby and then they followed up in the St Leger. Perfect Neighbour finished a very close second in the 2,000 Guineas.
TRAINERS
Champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta dominated the Classic races with wins in the Derby and St Leger, second in the 2,000 Guineas, first and third in the Derby and first, third and fourth in the St Leger. Anthony Nunes won the 1,000 Guineas with Selectabook who finished second in the St Leger.
JOCKEYS
Dick Cardenas ended as the top Classic rider for the year, riding two winners in the five Classic races on offer. He rode Selectabook to win the 1,000 Guineas and Perfect Neighbour in the St Leger. Four-time champion jockey Omar Walker is still to taste success in a Classic race. One overseas rider, Puerto Ricanborn Orlando Boacachica, tasted Classic success in Jamaica when he piloted Perfect Neighbour to victory in the Derby.
BREEDERS
The honour of being top breeder went hands down to YS (1955) Ltd. Horses bred at this St Elizabethbased farm won the 1,000 Guineas (Selectabook) by Natural Selection – Buyabook. Selectabook also finished second in the St Leger, while the best of the lot, Perfect Neighbour (Natural Selection — Desperate Housewife) finished second in the 2,000 Guineas and won both the Derby and the St Leger.
Top-flight performer and nativebred Miracle Man, now standing at stud, earned his first Classic victory when Lady Abhijita won the Oaks.
