Oh so ‘Perfect’ in St Leger
PERFECT Neighbour once again proved invincible for his fellow three-year-olds and in so doing ran out an easy winner in the 87th running of the $3.6-million Boom Jamaica St Leger to bring the native-bred Classic season to a close at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Following his 3 1/2-length victory in the Jamaica Derby three weeks ago, Perfect Neighbour was installed the 4-5 favourite in the Wisynco Group Limited-sponsored event. Showing much improvement since his last victory, the Alfred A Lee and Jeffrey Mordecai-owned dark bay colt accepted the challenge and won his second Classic of the season by an emphatic eight lengths.
Ridden by Dick Cardenas for trainer Wayne DaCosta, Perfect Neighbour ran 2,000 metres in an industrious 2:07.3 minutes. It was the best time for the event since 2004 when Run Papa Run, ridden by Trevor Simpson, won in a similar time.
Following the facile victory DaCosta was a happy trainer: “We went into the race very confident of victory if all went well. It did and with the torrid early pace set by the front-runners I knew it was just suited to Perfect Neighbour. As a result he had the race won from 600 metres out,” offered DaCosta.
Selectabook, one of three fillies in the race, finished best of the rest under Dane Nelson as a 12-1 chance for second money, while Hover Craft, a 5-1 stablemate of the winner ridden by Shane Ellis, finished third, with Rum Punch, another stablemate ridden by Winston Griffiths at odds of 6-1, completing the frame of 10.
Perfect Neighbour provided DaCosta with the second of three winners on the 11-race card. He had earlier saddled Insane Bolt, also ridden by Cardenas, to victory in the first race, and he closed the programme with Sink The Bismarck under Orlando Foster.
Meanwhile champion jockey Dane Nelson guided home a three-timer, Edison for trainer Richard Azan in the second, Sunshine City for Phillip Elliott in the seventh and Fierceandfabulous in the eighth race for trainer Anthony Nunes.
