3 Jamaicans among group of Elite Refs for 2013 Gold Cup
Miami, USA — Jamaica’s FIFA referee Courtney Campbell and assistant referees Ricardo Morgan and debutant Garnet Page were selected to officiate in the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) 2013 Gold Cup, which kicks off today.
The 44-year-old Campbell, who was a referee at the 2007 Gold Cup as well as qualifying for the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, had the distinction of doing the 2009 Gold Cup final match between Mexico and the United States of America.
Assistant referee Morgan also has some experience at the Gold Cup since 2007, and even appeared at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, while Page will be debuting at this level, having done a series of World Cup qualifying matches recently.
After a week of rigorous physical training and tests in Southern California under the supervision of CONCACAF Director of Referee Administration Brian Hall, a former FIFA World Cup referee, the list of 30 referees and six referee assessors for the duration of the tournament was selected.
“We are proud to have gathered such an elite group of referees to oversee the integrity of every game during Gold Cup,” said Enrique Sanz, general secretary of CONCACAF. “We look forward to seeing the best the region has to offer on the field, both players and match officials during this tournament.”
“CONCACAF has assembled a superb team of match officials for the 2013 edition of our premier national team tournament,” said Hall. “Each appointed official has just completed four extensive days of technical training and has shown exceptional levels of fitness by passing the required FIFA fitness test. We are confident that this group will manage each of the important CONCACAF Gold Cup matches at a world-class level.”
One referee, two assistant referees and a fourth official will be named for each CONCACAF Gold Cup match, beginning with today’s opening double-header at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, featuring matchups between Canada and Martinique, followed by Mexico and Panama.
The referees for those opening day matches, as well as those assigned to the opening rounds of Group B in Harrison, NJ, and Group C in Portland, were slated to be announced online via the GoldCup.org and CopaOro.org websites, at 2:30 pm Pacific Time yesterday.
Following that announcement, referees for each additional group play double-header will be revealed on-line 24 hours prior to the beginning of each match day.
At the conclusion of group play, 10 referees and 10 assistant referees will be selected to officiate the critical quarter-final and semi-final matches. From this group, two referees and two assistant referees will be appointed to direct the final game of the tournament.
