Moncriffe, Davis battle for Wray & Nephew Contender $1m prize
DEVON ‘Concrete’ Moncriffe and Tsetsi ‘Lights Out’ Davis are set to ‘duke it out’ in the final of the Wray & Nephew Contender Boxing series, which will be held today at the National Indoor Sports Centre. Both boxers belong to the Andrew Boland-led Yellow Team.
Moncriffe, the number one seed, and Davis, the number two seed, will compete for the first place purse of $1,000,000 and the title of Jamaica’s Ultimate Middleweight Boxer and the Wray & Nephew Contender in the highly anticipated final of the third season of the Wray & Nephew Contender. The second place winner will receive $500,000, third place $250,000 and fourth place $200,000.
Moncriffe, who is 36 years old, stands at 5′ 6″. His record stands at eight wins and two losses. He is from Glade District in Caymanas. Davis, who has a record of 11 wins and two losses, is 35 years old; stands 5′ 7 1/2″ tall. He is from Spanish Town, St Catherine.
In the first season of the Wray & Nephew Contender in 2011, Moncriffe defeated Davis in the semi-finals of the competition.
Speaking on the final, Cecil Smith, Marketing Manager for Owned Brands at J Wray & Nephew Limited said: “We are extremely proud of Wray & Nephew Contender, which has really driven the resurgence of boxing in Jamaica. This season has been the most exciting yet and we are all really looking forward to a thrilling final between Devon ‘Concrete’ Moncriffe and Tsetsi ‘Lights Out’ Davis.
“This year Wray & Nephew wanted to give as many people as possible the opportunity to see the fight live and to enjoy the spectacle that is the grand final of the Wray & Nephew Contender. We have set the price of general admission for the event at $500, so that Jamaicans over the age of 18 can come out and enjoy this thrilling night of sports entertainment. The Wray & Nephew Contender is an adults-only event. All persons attending the final must be 18 years and over, and will be required to produce a national ID to enter the National Indoor Sports Centre.”
Gates open for the event at 7:00 pm and TVJ will air the fight live starting at 9:30 pm. Ticket prices are $500 for general admission, with VIP costing $2,000 pre-sold and $2,500 at the gate. Ticket outlets are Western Sports atTwin Gates Shopping Centre, Petcom on Dunrobin Avenue, and Just Call Couriers.
Launched in 2010, the Wray & Nephew Contender has enjoyed unprecedented success. The television show has enjoyed record viewership during each of the three seasons and the live fights at the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) have also attracted sell-out crowds each week.
