Reggae Boyz Johnson, Ricketts star in Timbers win
PORTLAND, Oregon (CMC) — Jamaicans Ryan Johnson and Donovan Ricketts played key roles in Portland Timbers 3-0 victory over Colorado Rapids on Sunday and an unbeaten 15 games in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.
Second-half substitute Johnson sealed the win with a goal in the 84th minute with assists from Ben Zemanski and Rodney Wallace, the latter’s third of the match.
Earlier the Timbers got goals from Frederic Piquionne in the 12th minute, the team’s 100th goal in their MLS history and Will Johnson made it 2-0 at the start of the second half.
It was the eighth clean sheet for the Jamaican goalkeeper as he also stopped his Jamaican teammate Deshorn Brown in the 58th minute, the best chance for the Rapids.
The Timbers are now tied with Real Salt Lake on 30 points at the top of the Western Conference. Portland will play their eighth game in 31 days tomorrow with a US Open Cup quarter-final game on the road against FC Dallas before returning to MLS play on July 7 at Columbus.
