CTL concerned with disqualification of Campesino
THE promoters of horse racing in Jamaica, Caymanas Track Limited (CTL), is expressing grave concern following the decision of the Jamaica Racing Commission’s (JRC) race-day stewards to disqualify the winner of last Saturday’s third race, Campesino.
In a release issued on Saturday evening, CTL said that the acting chairman of the company Christopher Brown had asked CTL’s Chief Executive Officer Cedric Stewart to formally write to the chairman of the JRC, Linton Walters, to request an urgent meeting to review the operations of the stewards.
The company highlighted that this incident was one of several recent controversial decisions of the stewards, which threaten to erode the efforts of the management to strengthen the racing product.
There was uproar among racing fans after 1-5 favourite Campesino was disqualified for what was publicly announced as a chain-reaction infringement when the horses were rounding the half-mile turn. The fans vented their anger at the decision by throwing objects at the North Lounge area where the stewards are stationed. Fortunately no one was hurt and there were no visible signs of damage.
CTL in its release informed that reports of vandalism were also received from three of its off track betting parlours.
The Jamaica Observer understands that owner of Campesino Howard Hamilton has since lodged an appeal against the ruling of the race-day stewards.
