Some derby sidebars
1. Trainer Wayne DaCosta was winning his fourth Derby having done so in 1984 with Thornbird; 1996 with the Triple Crown winning War Zone and in 1999 with Good Prospect.
2. Orlando Bocachica was the first Puerto Rica-born jockey to win the Derby. The first time a foreigner won the Derby at Caymanas Park was in 1970 when Albino Ubidia from Panama won aboard the Ralph Zaidie trained Royal Crest.
3. Breeding farm YS (1995) Limited has won two of the four Classic races competed for this season. Apart from Perfect Neighbour who won the Derby their Selatabook (Natural Selection — Buyabook) won the 1000 Guineas.
4. The stallion Ghost Ransom has not only produced a Derby winner Ransom Man but also the dam of a Derby winner Desperate Housewife.
5. The 93rd running of the Derby created a unique piece of family history for the Mordecai clan. The Derby winner’s trophy is named after Sir John Mordecai the first chairman of the Jamaica Racing Commission when that body was established in the 1970s. One of the part owners of Perfect Neighbour is Jeffery Mordecai son of Sir John.
