Ricketts saves Portland Timbers
PORTLAND, Oregon (CMC) — Jamaican goalkeeper Donovan “Tall P” Ricketts recorded his fifth consecutive shutout to help the Portland Timbers to a 1-0 victory over FC Dallas in the Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday.
The Reggae Boyz custodian notched an impressive seven saves to clinch an important win for the Timber over
first-place Dallas in the Western Conference.
Liberian midfielder Darlington Nagbe 52nd minute goal highlighted a back-and-forth offensive showcase between two of MLS’ hottest teams which also featured Jamaicans Ryan Johnson and Je-Vaughn Watson.
Johnson was a second half substitute for the Timber while Watson played most of the 90 minutes for Dallas.
Portland won’t have much time to revel in the victory, however, as they travel to face the LA Galaxy on Wednesday before returning home to play host to Colorado next Sunday. Dallas welcomes Sporting Kansas City next Saturday.
Standing at six feet four inches and weighing 92 kg (198 lbs), Ricketts is an imposing figure in goal and has been a big part of the Reggae Boyz programme for sometime now, dating back to the days of former technical director Brazilian Rene Simoes.
The former LA Galaxy standout has not only kept goal for Jamaica at the senior level, but has also done it at various junior levels for his country. He came through the national ranks under the guidance of goalkeeping coach, Paul Campbell. Ricketts is a World Cup veteran, being named to the Jamaican squad that played in the World Cup finals in France 1998 — the third joice behind Warren Barrett and Aaron Lawrence.
Ricketts represented Jamaica in all eight of their 2010 World Cup qualifying matches, where the Boyz were eliminated in the third round stage.
Ricketts’ last match for Jamaica was against Honduras last Tuesday in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match where his team lost 2-0.
