The allure of the Derby
The Jamaica Derby is the race that all owners, jockeys, grooms and trainers want to win. It is the race which defines success, it is the race which will propel the connections to the pantheon of the greats, in short, the Jamaica Derby is simply, the mother of all races.
This year we have the 93rd running of the Jamaica Derby and with it as is always the case comes the discussions, the arguments, the assessments and of course trying to pick the winner. Willie Goldsmith unbeaten against his peers will probably start favourite but can he get the 12 furlongs of the Derby? Uncle Taf upset winner of the Governor’s Cup on a sloppy track. How will he fear now if the going is good? Perfect Neighbour the bridesmaid so often now has a foreign jock. Will he perform better on a good track? Bigman In Town has been the victim of some really bad luck in his races of late, stumbling, being interfered with and the likes. Will he now have safe passage?
These are just some of questions on the minds of racing fans. For sure the Park will be jammed pack tomorrow. Everyone will have their say; everyone will be cheering their favourite horses and whatever the eventual outcome a new page of racing history will be written tomorrow at Caymanas Park.
