Ja selects team for Carib Golf Champs
AFTER four challenging rounds at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club, the selectors of the Jamaica Golf Association have released the name of the golfers who have earned a place on the National Team to the 2013 Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships.
They are Paul Thompson, Jonathan Newnham, William Knibbs, Christopher Clarke and Ian Facey, the Elite players who will make up the Hoerman Cup team. All except Christopher Clarke have represented Jamaica in the region’s premier golf event.
In the Mid-Amateur category (Men over 35), Sean Morris and Lindell Bartley will be competing for the Ramon Baez Cup. Morris has appeared three times on the Jamaican side — once for Hoerman Cup and two for the Ramon Baez team. Both teams finished second, with Morris paired with different partners each time. Bartley, the second player, is also a newcomer to the squad. Dr Mark Newnham will be the reserve player for both categories.
Radliff Knibbs will be making his second appearance as a senior, and this time, will be paired with Gregory Chong to compete for the Francis & Steele Perkins Trophy. This will also be Chong’s second appearance as a Senior. JGA president, Wayne Chai Chong will act as reserve. The Super Senior team (Men over 60) will comprise Philip Wilson — a first-timer on the team — and Hamar Dayes, a seasoned National player. Jodi Munn, Rochell Prince and Michele Gabay will make up the Ladies team. Barrow and Prince have both played in the regional Championship at Junior and Senior levels, while Gabay has made the team twice in recent years.
Brian Roper, Selection Committee chairman, commented on the selection and planned team preparation, noting that “we were very pleased with the quality of golf played at the Trials”.
The Championships will take place at the Mahagony Run Golf Course in St Thomas, USVI.
