Waulgrovian ‘C’ too good for Molynes ‘B’
WAULGROVIANS ‘C’ defeated Molynes United ‘B’ 41-31 to capture the 2013 Best Dressed Chicken/Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Intermediate League final at the Leila Robinson Courts last Saturday.
It was a fine performance produced by the Patrick Brissett-coached aggregation who was winning the Intermediate League for the second time in three years.
First quarter action was evenly contested despite Molynes ‘B’ leading 6-4 before it was even 7-7 and locked two more times before Waulgrovians ‘B’ gained a slim 10-9 at the break.
Shooters from both sides, Apryl Thompson and Nicole Dixon of Waulgrovians ‘C’ and Rashida Whyte and Samantha Smith of Molynes ‘B’ began trading goals with the scores tied on four occasions, including 17-17 before the winners scored three straight goals to go into the half-time break with a 21-17 lead.
Molynes ‘B’ in the third quarter scored three consecutive goals to draw level (20-20) through shooters Smith and Whyte. It was the last time Molynes ‘B’ tied the scores at 21-21, as there were no stopping Waulgrovians ‘C’, who raced away to a 32-26 lead at the final break.
In the fourth and final quarter, Molynes ‘B’ needed to outscore Waulgrovians should they have a fighting chance of winning. However, with the nice centre court teamwork of Shanique Francis, Hansa Williams and Moya Green, they couldn’t put it together.
The losers failed to break the dominance of the winners’ defence, who went on to a very convincing victory 41-31.
For Waulgrovians ‘C’, Apryl Thompson netted 34 goals from 45 attempts and Nicole Dixon with seven goals from 10 efforts, while for Molynes ‘B’, Rashida Whyte scored 15 goals from 16 attempts and Samantha Smith with 15 goals from 19 efforts.
Marvette Anderson, a member of the coaching staff of Waulgrovians ‘C’ said it was a very good game and Molynes ‘B’ did well. “Winning is not strange for us as we had won the Division ‘C’ League in 2010 and we brought that into the Intermediate League,” she said.
Losing coach of Molynes ‘B’, Roy Pryce congratulated Waulgrovians for the victory and said his team played extremely well but lost out in the final quarter as his opponents were just too good.
Waulgrovians ‘C’ walked away with the winners’ cash prize of $75,000, the Best Dressed Chicken Trophy and players’ trophies, while Molynes United ‘B’ took home $60,000, the second-place trophy and individual trophies to the players.
