Thompson tops golf trials
Paul Thompson remained true to form, shooting 74 to put the finishing touches on four days of steady golf in the National Trials to select Jamaica’s team to the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships.
On yesterday’s final day, Thompson shot rounds of 74, 75, 74 and 74 for a total of 297, securing a place on the Hoerman Cup team.
In second position is Jonathan Newnham (302) who had an impressive round of two-under-par 70 on the second day of the Trials. William Knibbs finished third with 303, Christopher Clarke and Sean Morris tied for fourth position on 308, Ian Facey and Lindy Bartley finished tied in sixth position with 309 strokes.
Philip Wilson ended the Trials on 329 strokes to top the Super Senior group, while Hamar Dayes (86) and Fred Sutherland (83) both ended the Trials tied on 330.
Radcliff Knibbs had 80 strokes yesterday to complete the Trials at the top of the Senior category with 310 shots, while six strokes behind was Sandals-based Greg Chong (316). In third position was William Lee (328) and Jamaica Golf Association President Wayne Chai Chong copped fourth position (332).
In women’s action, Jodi Munn (326) shot 87 yesterday to finish at the top, with the closest competitor, Rochell Prince, finishing nine shots behind on 335. Michele Gabay finished third on 336, while junior national representative, Kei Harris made a valiant effort, but finished fourth on 356.
The selection policy of the Jamaica Golf Association dictates that the competitors first past the post in all the categories are automatic picks. However, the selectors have one discretionary pick in the Hoerman Cup (Men) and Franics & Steele-Perkins (Ladies) teams.
Chairman of the Selection Committee, Brian Roper, commended the Trialists on their performances and indicated that the team will be announced later this week.
