Newnham, Knibbs ahead in National Golf Trials
THE competition for places on Jamaica’s team to the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships heated up yesterday with Jonathan Newnham and William Knibbs shooting rounds of 70 and 72, respectively.
Both are now joint leaders with identical totals of 147. Paul Thompson is third on 149, while Christopher Clarke is two shots behind on 151.
Greg Chong held on to Thursday’s leadshooting one over par 73 and cementing his position in the senior division with a total of 152. The closest contender is Radcliff Knibbs who is six strokes behind on 158. Rory Jardine is now lying third with 159, and Alex Crowther is fourth with 160.
Opeton Marshall and Fred Sutherland have a narrow advantage in the Super Senior category. Both men are tied on 162 strokes ahead of Phillip Wilson and Hamar Dayes, who both finished the day with 164. Dennis Atkinson is two strokes behind on 166.
A seven-stroke difference puts Jodi Munn-Barrow (159) in front of Rochelle Prince (166), with Michele Gabay in third place with 174 strokes.
Product support for the Trials is being provided by Hi-Lyte Energy Drink. The third round will start at 8:00 am today at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club.
