Granville upset Corinaldi to claim VMBS U-13 title
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Granville All-Age scored a mild upset when they beat Corinaldi Avenue Primary 4-2 on penalty kicks to win the St James Football Association VMBS Under-13 title in an exciting game played at the UDC field on Wednesday.
Both teams played out a goal-less draw after 60 minutes of regulation and an extra 14 minutes of extra time and despite losing both their starting and back up goalkeepers to injury, Granville held their nerve to score all four spot kicks. Ewan Barton, who started the game as a striker took over after the second goalkeeper went down in extra time, came up big when he saved Corinaldi’s second kick taken by Chad Howell, just after converting his kick.
It was the second straight game that Granville were winning on penalty kicks after beating Anchovy Primary 3-2 in last week’s semi-finals.
In the third place play-off, Anchovy beat St James Prep 2-0 with goals from Jemoy Walters and Larone Tulloch in the second half.
Granville avenged an earlier 0-2 loss to Corinaldi Avenue, who were losing for the first time this season and for the second straight final after they lost to Catherine Hall last year.
Odane Gentles, Barton, Tavin Shaw and Giancardo Watkins scored for Granville, while Calvin Gardener and Denyu Ricketts scored for Corinaldi Avenue.
It was a bitter loss for the Steve Bucknor-coached Corinaldi Avenue, who failed to concede a single goal in regulation all season and would have gone into the final as favourites to win for the first time in three years.
After their loss in the first round, Granville obviously did their homework and contained the wide attacking threats while attacking on the counter.
Despite some enterprising plays by both teams, however, neither managed to get a goal, extending a streak from the semi-finals where both games went at least into extra time.
Corinaldi Avenue had beaten St James Prep 2-0 in extra time, while Granville beat Anchovy on penalty kicks.
