There’s Cause For Concern at the track
THE 3-1 shot Cause For Concern stormed to victory in the $438,000 Dr David ‘Jack’ Radix Memorial Cup claiming feature as the 8-5 favourite LA’s Dancer failed to raise a serious gallop at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Owned and trained by Joseph Thomas, Cause For Concern, ridden by Richard Mitchell, stormed through the field from below the distance to overhaul the leader Dancinwiththecats entering the final 200 metres.
Cause For Concern, who looked out of it after turning for home behind the field as Dancinwiththecats, ridden by the champion apprentice Shameree Muir, had the field off its legs, came forward strongly to gallop away from his rivals to register his second win of the season from nine starts. He ran 1,820 metres in a time of 2:05.4 minutes to win by a widening six lengths.
Zack had enough legs to soldier on for second, another 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Dancinwiththecats, who finished third at odds of 4-1, with Funny Side, who led along the backstretch before giving way to Dancinwiththecats, completed the frame as a 6-1 chance ridden by Paul Francis in the field of eight.
A four-year-old chestnut colt by Kerrygold out of Splinter Web (Splinter Red) and bred by Phillip Azar, Cause For Concern was winning for the third time from 23 career starts and earned $239,150 as the winner’s share for earnings of $1,226,350 lifetime.
Elsewhere on the card jockey Omar Walker continues his assault on the Jockeys’ Championship with another double on the programme to share the spotlight with Dick Cardenas.
Cardenas opened the programme aboard Dr Blair for trainer Wayne DaCosta and owners Elizabeth DaCosta and Elenanora Palmer, and Sparcle Haven for trainer Patrick Chang in race eight for owner Carlton Watson.
Walker first booted home Father Roy, the 4-5 favourite in the fifth race for owners Rohan R Harrison and Fitzgerald Richards, who is also the trainer. His other winner was Cataleya Racing Stable’s Ibelieveinmiracle for trainer Patrick Lynch in the seventh to move his win tally to 52, 13 more than champion Dane Nelson, who rode winless for the second day in succession.
Mitchell thought he rode back-to-back winners in the third and fourth races, but had his colours lowered aboard Sunlight Express in the fourth for trainer Patrick Taylor for causing interference to Rocketeer, ridden by Dick Cardenas. Second past-the-post Persian Gold, a 74-1 shot ridden by Percival Williams, was awarded the race. It was the second consecutive race that the WB Racing four-year-old colt trained by Howard Jaghai was being awarded the race in the Stewards Room.
On May 23 when ridden by Andrew Ramgeet, Persian Gold was awarded the race after he had been deemed to be blocked by Judge Judy then ridden by Cardenas, who went on to win the race.
