JAMALCO lift netball crown
MANY-TIME champions JAMALCO of Clarendon once again demonstrated their superiority to come out on top in the best-of-three finals, defeating Tivoli ‘A’ in the final game Monday 36-33 in the Jamaica Netball Association/Berger Paints Super League at the Leila Robinson Courts.
JAMALCO beat Tivoli ‘A’ 55 to 45 in the first leg of the final on Thursday, while the second match on Saturday ended in a tie with both teams scoring 44 goals.
On Monday night’s Game Three, spectators were treated to a closely contested and exciting affair, with JAMALCO again.
The first quarter ended with JAMALCO on 11 and Tivoli on six; at the end of the second quarter it was JAMALCO 21, Tivoli 13 and the third quarter ended with JAMALCO on 30 and Tivoli ‘A’ on 24. In the final quarter, Tivoli ‘A’ stepped up their game and actually led at one point but JAMALCO prevailed.
JAMALCO’s goal-shooter Elaine Davis netted 36 from 57 attempts with Sabrina Spence of Tivoli getting 22 from 29 attempts and teammate Jodi Ann Kentish scoring 11 from 21.
Jamalco collected the winners’ trophy and prize money of $200,000; with $140,000 going to the runners-up Tivoli ‘A’, while Mico collected $80,000 for placing third and UWI Pelicans ‘A’ received $50,000 for fourth.
Sabrina Spence of Tivoli ‘A’ was the Most Accurate Shooter for which she received prize money of $9,000; the Second Most Accurate Shooter was Shantal Slater of GC Foster and she received $7,000, while the Best Offensive Team was Tivoli ‘A’ for which they received $10,500. The Best Defensive Teams were Tivoli ‘A’ and Mico ‘A’, who received $5,250 each.
The Most Valuable Player award, along with $5,000, went to Sasher Gaye Henry of JAMALCO.
