Mexicans wary of Reggae Boyz threat
Having not won a match in 2013, the Mexicans arrived in Jamaica eager and hungry to rev up their World Cup campaign and only a win will be good enough.
Head coach Jose Manuel del la Torre was full of confidence after his team’s one-hour training session after arriving in the island approximately 1:30 pm.
“We won’t be holding back, we are here to play,” said Torres via a translator at the briefing immediately after training at the National Stadium.
He also cleared the air on the fitness of two key Mexican players in Hector Moreno of Spanish club Espanyol and Giovani dos Santos of Mallorca, also from La Liga.
“They are medically cleared to play but they are like few days away from game rhythm,” said Torre.
But although he was cognizant of the fact that the Reggae Boyz won’t be at full strength, when quizzed, he raised his eyebrows. “Although they are having problems with injury any Jamaican team will be ready to play.”
Mexico are in unfamiliar waters in the Hexagon round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers lying fifth in the six-team group on three points, just ahead of bottom placed Jamaica with two points.
They have not been able to capitalise their home court advantage, dropping four points against Jamaica and the USA earlier in the year. Now they have a huge deficit to make up although they are just three points behind the leader Panama on five.
Manchester United striker Hernandez, who has scored Mexico’s last four goals, will again be the main man but they should get a boost with the return of dos Santos who scored for his club Mallorca although they were relegated from La Liga.
The Mexican team should be selected from goalkeeper Guilermo Ochoa; defenders: Carlos Salcido, Diego Reyes, Severo Meza, Franccisco Rodriquez; midfielders: Gerardo Torrado, Pablo Barrera, Andres Guardado, Giovani dos Santos; Forwards: Aldo De Nigris, Javier Hernandez.
