Boyz to the ‘max’
TAKING maximum points at home. Those words are key in the minds of the technical staff and the players as the Reggae Boyz host CONCACAF heavyweights Mexico in tonight’s World Cup Qualifier at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Jamaica currently sit at the base of the six-team group with two points from three matches, while Mexico — perennial qualifiers from the region — are one place better off after three draws in as many outings.
The highlight for Jamaica so far has been the disciplined display in the 0-0 result in Meixco’s famed Azteca Stadium.
Jamaica’s assistant coach Alfredo Montesso, who was recently announced as the country’s new technical director, fielded questions from a throng of local and Mexican journalists after yesterday’s closed practice session at the match venue.
He was unequivocal regarding the intended approach of the home team in today’s return game.
“The only thing accepted is a victory. We have to understand one thing. It is important for us to win this game, it is important to be very positive and to be very aggressive to win this game, but of course we have to be careful with Mexico.
“Everybody knows Mexico is a very strong team with players with a lot of experience. (But) any team that wishes to qualify for the World Cup has to win the games at home,” he said.
Despite key injuries, which has propelled Under-20 defender Alvas Powell to the fore, the Brazilian tactician remains optimistic.
“The mood of the team is very good… the training sessions we’ve had gave the team a lot of confidence (though) we had some changes in the team, unfortunately, because of injury,” Montesso added.
A relaxed-looking Reggae Boyz captain and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts sported a broad grin as he faced reporters.
He said the players are “confident and happy” and added that the goal is to replicate the level of organisation that was witnessed in Mexico a few months ago.
Asked by the Jamaica Observer to share what kind of result he is looking for, the goalkeeper smiled before shouting back in a typically witty and jovial manner.
“Weh yuh just say? Ask me again. Three points, man!”
