Drama in game two of netball Super League
GAME Two of the best-of-three finals brought a no result between defending champions JAMALCO and Tivoli ‘A’ after they ended in a 44-44 draw in the 2013 Berger Paints/ Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Super League at the Leila Robinson Courts on Saturday night.
The third game, however, is scheduled to be played this evening.
The JNA council decided that Tivoli ‘A’ who lost 55-45 to JAMALCO would have to win by more that 10 goals to become the champions.
It was a controversial end to the game as coaches, players and spectators were left confused as to whether or not there would be extra time. Some of the spectators even started to boo the officials as it took almost 30 minutes before any decision was taken by the JNA council.
Members of the JNA council further met after the game and decided that the teams would play 14 minutes extra time to determine a winner, but one of the coaches said the players could not continue.
JAMALCO’s coach Winston Nevers said his players were ready for the added time and were warming up, but was informed that his opponents could not take the court because of injuries to players.
President of the JNA Marva Bernard said that she apologised to the coaches, players and spectators for not having a bylaw in place to address such a case. “We need to now look into this matter when we meet with the clubs for the next season,” she said.
Meanwhile, in the one hour encounter between both teams, JAMALCO led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter and held a narrow 22-21 lead at half time.
Tivoli ‘A’ rallied nicely in the third quarter to move in front and took a 36-32 lead at the final break. A ding-dong battle ensued in the fourth and final quarter with JAMALCO rallying to level at 38-38.
The struggle continued with nine minutes remaining with JAMALCO going in front 41-38, and then it was locked 42-42 with Tivoli ‘A’ going up 43-42 with 1:44 minutes remaing.
As the ding-dong battle continued, again they were tied up 43-43 with JAMALCO going up 44-43, but with seconds remaining, Tivoli ‘A’ attacked quickly to tie the match 44-44 before the final whistle.
For JAMALCO, goal-shooter Elaine Davis netted 37 goals from 46 attempts and goal-attack Naudia Brown hit seven goals from 10 efforts, while for Tivoli ‘A’, goal-shooter Sabrina Spence scored 27 goals from 38 attempts and goal-attack Jodi-Ann Ffrench-Kentish scored 17 goals from 20 attempts.
Meanwhile, Mico ‘A’ surprised UWI Pelicans ‘A’ 36-26 to win the third and fourth place play-off also decider, also on Saturday.
