Rivoli, August Town a win away from NPL status
RIVOLI United and August Town clash in the top-of-the-table playoff encounter at the UWI Bowl today at 3:30 pm, knowing that a win could see them qualify for the Premier League.
After four of the six round-robin games, St Catherine’s Rivoli United are on top of the four-team group with eight points, followed by urban champions August Town on seven, Volvo of St Ann with four, and St James’ Wadadah at the bottom on three points.
A win for Rivoli United would push them to an unassailable 11 points with one match remaining. If August Town win and Volvo fail to beat Wadadah, then they too would qualify. So the real pressure is on the bottom to win and keep their slim chances alive.
At the UWI Bowl, home team August Town suffered their first defeat of the qualifiers last Wednesday against Wadadah and now back at home for their last two games, are fancied to secure one of the two qualifying spots.
In their first meeting, August Town and Rivoli United battled to a 0-0 draw at the Spanish Town Prison Oval and, now playing at home, the pressure will be on August Town to deliver.
Rivoli are in the driver’s seat and, following their impressive 3-0 demolition of Volvo last Wednesday, should be bubbling with confidence, and Devon Hodges and company should make it a difficult evening for the home team.
At Drax Hall in St Ann, another keen contest is expected between home team Volvo and Wadadah.
After losing their first three games, Wadadah rebounded with a 1-0 win over August Town, and another win over Volvo would give them a look in, especially since they have Rivoli to play last at home.
Volvo, on the other hand, are also hoping for a win to keep their slim chances alive and should be boosted by their 2-0 away win over Wadadah in the first round, and could repeat that win and put themselves in contention to secure one of the top two spots.
