Fit Hupomone for ‘Sarge’ Bucknor Mem Cup
Imported filly Hupomone who seemed to have hit a brick wall since turning four has now looked fit and well in her preparation for the $715,000 GA ‘Sarge’ Bucknor Memorial Cup feature at Caymanas Park today.
And with her rough edges disappearing from her four-year-old performances she could prove a handful for rivals in this Overnight Allowance caper for three-year-olds upward.
The highligh of the day’s nine-race card, the ‘Sarge’ Bucknor has attracted a lively bunch of three-year-olds going 1,000 metres straight with a post time set at approximately 4:45 pm. First post at 12:45 pm.
Before turning four Hupomone had been a model of consistency by twice winning at two years old and thrice at three.
Since coming of age so to speak, Hupomone seems to be still taking her time to adjust to the added competition. However, in her two starts as a promising four-year-old, she has never been less than third which is a worthy sign of hope.
Prepared for her races by Wayne DaCosta for owners Elizabeth A DaCosta, Laurence E Heffes & Eric Martin, Hupomone by Omaga Code out of Blazing Fizz (Slew Gin Fizz) bred by Big C Farm in the USA, has already won over the straight course at three in a blazing time of 57.1 seconds.
Now meeting more seasoned campaigners in the class, she may have to work a bit harder. But from her preparation, she looks to have the edge as was demonstrated from her last run when she was third to Open Allowance campaigners The Guv and stablemate Rio Cobre going 1,100 metres.
To show that she is in good heart, Hupomone was up with the pace from the off and was still keeping on even after The Guv came storming forward to take the event from Rio Cobre. Dick Cardenas who was aboard then and will again have the leg up.
The presence of stablemate Double The Honey and My Friend Lucy along with Double Button and Sunshine Boy will test the judgement of Cardenas to get the filly really rolling passing the dummy rails.
While My Friend Lucy is in strikingly good competitive shape, the main danger to Hupomone could manifest itself with Double Button trained by Gordon Lewis and to be ridden by the leading rider Omar Walker. Double Button is a sly customer by Double Honour, who has already won over the distance in a fine time of 57.4. She was then ridden by Cardenas but did not beat much in terms of Overnight Allowance company.
However, this chestnut filly does enjoy the straight course and with Walker in such good riding form he has the ability to get them going at the right time.
The down in grade Double The Honey seems to be still groping for form even after five starts in his six-year-old season. Not a spent force by any means as was demonstrated on May 25 when he breezed 600 metres in a time of 35.3 and by stepping down could turn the form around as 1,000 metres straight is one of his pet event.
Therefore, coming in at 54.0kg for the 3.0kg claiming apprentice Ruja LaHoe the bay son of Double Honour out of Ahoneyofabunny (Northern Prospect) bred by Manuel Adrade in the USA could just as easy turn the form around as he did in October of last year before returning to Open Allowance company.
Last but not least is Sunshine Boy, the mount of champion jockey Dane Nelson, like Hupomone has gone over the course in a time of 57.1 and Nelson was aboard in both instances.
It is ironic that trainer Subratie calls for the services of Nelson aboard Sunshine Boy that could make this race a true feature by being competitive to the final stride with Cardenas, Nelson and Walker to call forth all their grit and determination in an attempt to get their mounts accross the finishing line first.
