Rivoli soar to top as August Town stumble
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former Premier League champions Wadadah FC clipped August Town 1-0 for their first win in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) All-Island Confederation play-offs in yesterday’s return leg game at Jarrett Park to rekindle their fading hopes of a return to the big leagues.
Damion Reid’s first-half goal gave the Western Confederation Super League champions their first win as August Town, the previous leaders, conceded their first goal of the series as they slipped to second place.
Rivoli United beat Volvo FC 3-0 at the Spanish Town Prison Oval to take over the lead on eight points, one more than August Town’s seven. They are followed by Volvo on four and Wadadah now on three.
Wadadah are also holding out hopes that their protest over the use of an alleged ineligible player in their game in Montego Bay last week would be successful.
Information reaching the Jamaica Observer is that the player in question is registered to Village United, but was on loan to Benfica in the St Ann Major League. The Jamaica Football Federation confirmed they had received the letter of protest from Wadadah but were still doing their investigations.
Yesterday, Wadadah’s coach Daniel Ricketts inserted himself in the starting line-up, telling the Observer they needed “some more experience” and pointed out that once he came off after about an hour on the field, the players went back to their wasteful ways.
Ricketts also revealed their hopes were somewhat revived but pride was also at stake. “If we are going to go out, we are going out fighting and with pride,” he said.
Ricketts, the brother of national goalkeeper Donovan, said they were going after full points in their next two games and hope for the best. “Last time I was in a play-offs, Humble Lion advanced to the Premier League with nine points so you never can tell,” he said.
August Town coach Christopher Bender, while disappointed with the result, said the goal of reaching the Premier League was still on.
“This is not as big a setback as it might look. We have two home games and we took four points from the previous two away games, so we just have to go back home and take care of business. We are still extremely positive,” he said.
