JAMALCO, Tivoli ‘A’ set for final
DEFENDING champions JAMALCO and arch-rivals Tivoli ‘A’ will face each other in the best-of-three finals of the 2013 Berger Paints/Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Super League competition this evening at the Leila Robinson Courts, beginning at 6:00.
Both teams earned their places in the three-match play-off series by winning their respective semi-finals played last Tuesday. In those matches, JAMALCO defeated Mico ‘A’ 42-32, while Tivoli ‘A’ pulled off a thrilling ten-second last shot 48-47 goal win over a spirited UWI Pelicans ‘A’.
This evening’s first of three games promises to be another humdinger as their first meeting in preliminary round, where JAMALCO just held off Tivoli ‘A’ 41-40 in the last few seconds.
Interestingly, JAMALCO and Tivoli ‘A’ faced each other earlier this season in the Jamaica Nationals (JN) Open League final where it was won by JAMALCO 32-26. This is the third meeting between the two teams with JAMALCO coming out victorious on two occasions.
Another interesting point between both teams is the fact that they are meeting each other in their eighth final, with JAMALCO winning five and Tivoli ‘A’ with two triumphs. Last year, in the best-of-three play-off series finals JAMALCO tagged Tivoli ‘A’ 2-0, 42-32 and 43-42 to gain their ninth hold on the Berger Paints Super League Trophy.
The big question, however, is can Tivoli ‘A’ turned the tables, or will JAMALCO be able to continue their dominance over their rivals.
Winston Nevers, coach of JAMALCO, said: “I think both teams will have another ding-dong battle as in previous years. Tivoli ‘A’ is not an easy team to be beat. We won by only one goal (41-40) when we met in preliminary round.”
Coach of Tivoli ‘A’, Sylvester Campbell said he expects another tough battle between the teams.
