Three cricketers to remain in jail ’til June 4
NEW DELHI, India (AP) — A Delhi court has ordered Test cricketer Shantakumaran Sreesanth and two other players arrested by Indian police for their alleged role in a spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League to remain remanded in custody until June 4.
Rajasthan Royals players Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested on May 17 for allegedly conceding more than a specific number of runs in an over in exchange for up to six million rupees (US$110,000) from bookmakers for every over.
Charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust have been brought against all three players, who also stand provisionally suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Several bookmakers and their associates are also under arrest, including Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of BCCI chief Narainswamy Srinivasan.
